Transformative Impact of Generative AI Tools on Information Creativity and AI Literacy in Higher Education: Case Studies

Background: Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools can have a transformative impact on information creativity.
Objective: The objectives of this study are to explore the use of GenAI by doctoral and master students as part of information creativity, AI literacy and transformation of higher education. We ask the question: What is the impact of GenAI tools on information creativity?Methods: Studies of information creativity, AI literacy, and creative writing of university students were analysed. We report on two qualitative case studies, including 17 doctoral students (a focus group, essays), and a qualitative experiment with 8 master students using ChatGPT for writing and interviews. For analyses, we applied qualitative data analyses and conceptual modelling.
Results: Findings are visualized in two tables of categories, quotations, and a conceptual model of the AI enhanced information co-creativity, composed of awareness, exploration, imagination, transformations, metacognition. We have identified the analytical and the surface styles of the AI enhanced creative writing. The transformative impact of GenAI tools is integrated by human control and metacognition, AI literacy and ethics of AI.
Conclusion: We have proved the transformative impact of GenAI on education, research and academic work. We recommend further research of AI literacy and information co-creativity. and propose courses on information creativity, AI literacy and design of innovative services of libraries and universities.
